News

2007.12.09
After some time off, I've begun to fix a few things here and there. The build tools I used 3 years ago aren't available, so I'm offering my latest updates via Java Web Start. Most of the recent work benefits Mac users: Leopard compatibility and rock solid serial communications. You can get the latest builds here.

2004.01.24
Tonto 1.44 is now tagged as stable. Because the new line of Pronto/Marantz remotes is completely incompatible and I lack the documentation to fix this, I am no longer actively developing Tonto. If anyone is interested in taking the project forward, please contact me directly.

2003.08.18
Tonto now has the dedicated IRC channel #tonto on freenode.net.

2003.04.02
1.43 is a stabilized version of the last several point releases. If you're running a 1.4x version prior to this, please upgrade.

2002.11.02
1.40 is finally here. This release fixes a couple of upload/download issues and an RF bug with Marantz remotes.

2002.10.21
Added a simple Java API tutorial under 'Guide/Tonto Tutorials'.

2002.10.01
1.39 is now available. This fixes several long-standing bugs including recursive aliases. Enjoy.

2002.09.29
After quite a bit of analysis and soul-searching, I've determined that Tonto, in it's present incarnation, is not suitably designed to take on the divergent configuration formats and communications protocols of the new 500, 3000 and iPronto. See the FAQ for more detail. But that's not the end of the story. Please stay tuned and I'll let you know when there is news fit to print.

2002.09.08
1.38 is available in the usual places. Normal disclaimers apply.

2002.09.04
1.36 contains a serious bug that can result in lost IR codes in action lists. If you are using 1.36, please upgrade immediately. 1.37 and beyond are already available.

2002.08.30
1.34 just escaped from captivity. The only reason for this is that it contains an interesting new feature called 'Tab Master'. Read about it under the 'Guide/Tutorials' link. One hopes this is the only exception for the 2.0 freeze.

2002.08.15
1.30 is now available. This will be the last series of 1.xx releases. Any release before 2.0 will be focused primarily on bug fixes and not new features.

2002.08.05
1.25 is now available. The last few releases have primarily been focused on bug fixes. Check the changelog for details. 1.25 has a new upload/download facility that is a lot more reliable. Please test and report your findings.

2002.07.27
1.20 is now available. Important new changes include: multi-level undo/redo, control over icon compression, validation of CCF size, grid snap corner selection, revert-to menu in case upgrade is buggy, preservation of more window sizes and lots of bug fixes. Of course there's more, but you can read the changelog yourself. Undo/Redo is totally new so expect bugs. Save early, often and with different file names.

2002.07.24
1.19 just hit the web site. The major new features for 1.19 center around multiple selections: alignment, grouping and movement. It also has a new icon toolbar, a lot usability enhancements and a bunch of bug fixes.

2002.07.21
My apologies to everyone who downloaded 1.185 today. It had a major selection bug that is now fixed in 1.186.

2002.07.20
1.18 just posted with a few new important features: tabbed interface for multiple documents, hooks for external emulators and editors and keyboard traversal of objects.

2002.07.17
A network update feature was added to 1.17 that, when enabled, allows Tonto to periodically check for updates and install them in the background (after asking). This eliminates multiple installations, and the update size is significantly smaller than the full package. A serious IR encoding bug and some grid snapping bugs were fixed. Native OS X menu integration was added.

2002.07.15
1.16 just posted with very cool new functionality. Check out 'Copy Alias' and 'Paste Alias' or the related right-click menus for Devices and Buttons. Now it's incredibly easy to create complex action lists. You can now do global Icon replacement under the Module menu. The Windows installer has been upgraded and migrated to the IBM JVM. The Tree size is now stored in preferences. And a host of bugs has been squashed. Please see the changelog for more details.

2002.07.13
1.15 just posted with important new functionality: the ability to import and export CCF's as zip files containing an XML manifest and GIF images. This provides an easy way to automate the generation of your own CCF's or do programmatic bulk changes without using the Java API.

2002.07.10
1.14 is out and it contains significant new features: multiple document editing, auto-loading of favorite documents, panel re-tiling, whole-device hard-key cloning and a lot more. Tonto updates are now being regularly posted on freshmeat.net.

2002.07.03
1.10 is finally here. Many wishes have been granted: undo/redo, color mapping, icon editing and more. Every major bug I am aware of has been crushed. It's hot off the compiler, so come and get it!

2002.06.24
1.099 is out and it's a huge improvement. A ton of bug fixes, usability improvements and finally a solution to Marantz woes!

2002.05.21
1.10 is late. At least 1.095 is out with a bunch of interesting updates and new features. Check out my first cut at CCF documentation under 'Docs'. If you are experiencing a kernel panic on OSX, please read the FAQ.

2002.04.13
A very busy few months. I am preparing a 1.10 release that will include all Tonto source code and supporting libraries. For now, 1.09 has been released with better Marantz 5200, 9200 support.

2002.01.23
A lack of news does not indicate a lack of activity. I'm in the process of refactoring some of Tonto's internals. The main thrust of the changes are to allow Module development with a sensible API.

2002.01.01
Release 1.00 posted. Added Windows EXE installer that includes Java2 JVM. Extended comm timeout preference range for really fast machines. Happy New Year!
